Definition:
A cataract is the loss of transparency of the lens.
Together with the cornea, the lens, which is positioned directly behind the pupil, focuses rays of light onto the retina. The severity of the condition depends on the degree of opacity of the lens.
Usually the condition occurs in old age, but it can also develop in patients of any age.
Depending on the position of the cataract, they can be defined as:
nuclear cataracts, which affect the centre or nucleus of the lens
subcapsular cataracts, which affect the back of the lens in the membrane or capsular which covers the lens
or cortical cataracts, which begin on the outer edge of the lens or cortex
