Treatment
Phacoemulsification is the most modern technique for treating cataracts.
Using ultrasound the lens is broken down and extracted. Next, an intraocular lens is inserted through a tiny incision of about 3 mm. This artificial lens will not only replace the original lens, but can also compensate for any myopia or hyperopia that the patient had before the operation.
This is an outpatient intervention that does not require hospitalisation. The operation takes about 20 minutes and is carried out with a local anaesthetic. Once the intervention is over patients may return home and their vision will recover very quickly.
