The current surgical techniques using the excimer laser (EPILASIK and LASIK) are limited by the thickness of the cornea, which usually measures about 500 microns. With this technique it is usually possible to correct up to approximately 12 dioptres of myopia and 6 dioptres of astigmatism or hyperopia.

There are cases where, whether due to an excess of dioptres or because the cornea is excessively thin, the limits of the laser technique are exceeded. In these cases it is possible to fall back on the use of intraocular lenses.

All cases of myopia or hyperopia (even at low degrees) may be treated using this technique as long as the pre-operative ophthalmologic examination has ruled out the possibility of any disorders of the eye, although at VistaLáser we usually only use it for cases of high myopia or hyperopia.
