The retina is the internal layer at the back of the eye. It is made up of cells or neurons that are specifically adapted for vision.

Many illnesses, such as diabetes or high blood pressure can provoke serious changes in the retina.

Disorders of the retina in diabetics are currently the biggest cause of blindness in the developed world. In suitable cases, an early diagnosis and appropriate treatment with an argon laser can slow the process down significantly.

Some people have areas in their retinas that are weaker than usual. This condition is more common amongst people who are myopic. If the retina is weak small lesions can occur which may lead to a serious risk of parts of the retina detaching. Prompt treatment of these lesions, using an argon laser to seal them, significantly reduces the risk of detachment occurring.
